My Favorite Exercise Videos To Use At Home

I don’t belong to a gym.  I have belonged before – many different times actually – and I just can’t seem to get there for more than a few months.  If I had all the money back I have spent on gym memberships over the years….well, better to not think about that.

It is hard to go to the gym or plan any organized exercise with small children.  I belonged to the local YMCA when my son was young but it was very stressful to leave him in the child care.  Do I explain to the care provider of the day my sons idiosyncrasies, bring up his autism, hope he doesn’t spend the whole time running back and forth touching one wall, then the opposite, then back and forth and back and forth…  And then what do you do with your kids after they age out of the child care?  I’m sure they don’t want either of mine wandering aimlessly.  Alas, it was time to exercise at home.

I have a treadmill and  I use it sometimes but my favorite exercise comes from my library of
videos.  I have yoga and Pilates and aerobics and Booty Ballet – okay, some of these videos I have only used once!  I spent last summer bonding with The Firm ladies and their Fanny Lifter and I have had exactly one date with Billy Blanks and his Bootcamp.

I always wanted to do yoga but was intimidated about attending a class.  Also I have IBS and sometimes all that stretching is not a good thing in public.    I found a really good beginning yoga video from a group called Yoga Zone.  The instructor is sitting giving specific directions with other students modeling the actions.  I have passed this video on to others – its a great introduction to terms and poses.  Though I never have mastered that tree….

My current favorite private trainer is a woman named Ellen Barrett.  She has many different  videos integrating yoga and Pilates.  I once tried a bonafide Pilates video and I couldn’t make it through the intro -  this is a little more accessible.  Ellen’s videos are easy to follow and the exercises are varied. The Burn and Firm uses light weights -  I use this when I want to work up a sweat.  The   Super Slim Down Pilates Yoga Blend is a great toning and stretching video.   I also have a different one called Pick Your Level Pilates.  I like Ellen’s mannerisms and her cheerful attitude that is not too cheerful.  The videos are also about 45 minutes so they fit into whatever schedule I have going on.

In a perfect world I could afford both the time and the money I would need to join the gym and take that Zumba class but until I have more of each you can find me in my basement with my video coaches!!

Your blog is so cute, and funny. A friend of mine gave me your link and I’ve been reading off and on all day. I love your ideas and recipes but this one post really made me giggle and I had to reply. I do not go to a gym, but I do take Zumba at my city cener. It is $45 for 6 weeks, 2 times a week. It was really fun the first round, this second it’s ok, and my sister bought me the dvd set for my birthday so I can now do the Zumba in my basement for almost the cost of another round of classes. Thanks, Tricia!! So glad you enjoy the blog. It is still a new adventure for me and still fun. I’m trying to spend a little more time these days with the coaches. I got a new one from Prevention for Kickboxing with Chris Freytag. This one is really fun!
